Learn to extend Claude's capabilities by building a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects Claude Desktop to external APIs. This hands-on tutorial guides participants through creating a simple MCP server using Python and conda, demonstrating how to enable Claude to access real-time data from the New York Times Books API.
Participants will learn MCP fundamentals, including server architecture, tool definitions, and client-server communication protocols. The tutorial covers project setup with conda, implementing API wrappers with proper error handling, defining tools for Claude to use, and configuring Claude Desktop for integration.
Attendees will leave with a working MCP server and practical knowledge to build their own integrations. No prior MCP experience required.
